Overview of the SC Youth Court Association

Founded October, 2002

PURPOSE: The purpose of the South Carolina Youth Court Association (hereinafter referred to as “the Association”) is to form a strong network of people and organizations affiliated with or interested in South Carolina Youth Courts to help ensure the highest possible program quality for all Member Youth Courts through information sharing, support, training and guidance between and among all involved.

GOALS: The goals of the Association are to:

  1. Increase public awareness of and support for Youth Court
  2. Promote interagency cooperation and information sharing among Member Youth Courts
  3. Provide technical assistance to all Member Youth Courts
  4. Encourage the establishment of new youth courts where they do not exist
  5. Provide continuing education and training for those operating Youth Courts
  6. Build a strong network among existing Youth Courts for information sharing and support

OBJECTIVES: The Association strives to:

  • Build and support all Member Youth Courts on a restorative justice foundation
  • Provide assistance as needed to communities establishing new Youth Courts
  • Establish a standardized framework for the goals, procedures, and processes of all Member Youth
  • Courts to assure adherence to understood national standards, and to lend credence to Member
  • Youth Courts
  • Serve as liaison between SC Youth Courts and the National Youth Court Center
  • Provide training opportunities based on the needs and requests of Member Youth Courts
  • Publicize the benefits of Youth Court for South Carolina youth
  • Expedite the handling of minor juvenile offenses, reducing the burden on South Carolina juvenile courts
